Benefit Highlights

MPERS administers retirement and survivor benefits, disability benefits, and death benefits for members of the system in accordance with Chapter 104 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri (RSMo). The retirement system operates as a 401(a) tax qualified "defined benefit plan". To be eligible to participate in the retirement system, you must be employed in a benefit eligible position that normally requires you to work at least 1,000 hours per year.

MPERS currently administers two plans, the Closed Plan and the Year 2000 Plan. Although the benefits provided by the two plans vary, each provides a pension benefit that is calculated using a formula that takes into consideration the following factors:

  • Your highest 36 consecutive months of pay
  • Your years and months of creditable service, and
  • A multiplier that is set by the legislature.

The more service you have and the higher your annual salary, the higher your retirement benefit will be. There are several sources that should make up your total retirement income: your retirement benefit from MPERS, your social security benefit, and your personal savings. By familiarizing yourself with your future estimated benefits from MPERS and social security you will be better able to assess how much you will need in personal savings to achieve your desired standard of living during retirement.
