2-Step Retirement Process
Starting with April 1, 2010 retirements, MPERS will be transitioning to a 2-Step Retirement Process. This new process gives you more time to make your retirement elections and allows MPERS to provide you with more individualized information. If you have already submitted a retirement application to retire in 2010, you do not have to resubmit your form under this new process. We will process your retirement as submitted. If you have any questions regarding the 2-Step Retirement Process, please contact a MPERS benefit specialist at (573) 298-6080 or (800) 270-1271.
Step 1: Notification of Intent to Retire
To start the retirement process:
1. Complete a Notification of Intent to Retire form.
2. Attach an acceptable proof-of-age document. If you are married, attach an acceptable proof-of-age document for your spouse and a copy of your marriage certificate.
3. Send the form and proof document(s) to MPERS by the deadline listed on the Date Forms Are Due at MPERS chart (below) that coincides with your intended date of retirement. (For example, if you intend to retire April 1, your Notification of Intent to Retire must be submitted to MPERS by January 31.)
MPERS will use your intended date of retirement and spouse information to prepare your individualized Application for Retirement and benefit estimate(s).
Step 2: Application for Retirement
MPERS will send you an individualized Application for Retirement and benefit estimate(s) in the mail. The application will show all retirement options for which you are eligible (e.g. benefit payment options, retirement plan, and BackDROP). If you are eligible for BackDROP, you will also receive a BackDROP Distribution Form and Special Tax Notice brochure. The benefit estimate(s) should provide enough information to help you make informed retirement decisions.
1. Complete the Application for Retirement.
2. Complete the BackDROP Distribution Form (if applicable). If electing the rollover option, the receiving financial institution must also complete this form.
3. Send both forms to MPERS by the deadline listed on the chart that coincides with your intended date of retirement. (For example, if your intended date of retirement is April 1, your Application for Retirement and any remaining documentation must be submitted to MPERS by February 28.)
Date Forms are Due at MPERS
Based on your intended date of retirement, your Notification of Intent to Retire and Application for Retirement must be received at MPERS by the dates listed on the chart below. Since this is a new process, we will provide a reasonable grace period on the due dates until July 1. Starting with July 1 retirements, the due dates will be strictly enforced. Submitting either form after the deadline will delay your retirement date.
