Every year, MPERS provides a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) to help your retirement benefits keep pace with inflation. We know many retirees look forward to hearing the COLA rate, and we often get calls asking when it will be announced. Here’s the answer:
When Will You Know the Rate?
MPERS announces the COLA rate as soon as Consumer Price Index (CPI) data is available and calculations are complete, which is usually in mid-January.
Why Can’t We Announce It Right Away?
The COLA rate is based on the CPI for the previous calendar year. The federal government must finalize the CPI before MPERS can calculate the adjustment. This process typically wraps up in January, and only then can we determine the official rate.
When Will It Be Applied?
- Closed Plan: COLAs are applied in October.
- Year 2000 Plan and 2011 Tier: COLAs are applied on your retirement anniversary date.
