MPERS Celebrates 70 Years of Service This August

Jun 2, 2025 | News

MPERS was established through Senate Bill 66, which became effective on August 29, 1955. Originally known as the Highway Employees’ and Highway Patrol Retirement System, the System accepted its first 109 retirements just one month later, on October 1, 1955.

In its early years, MPERS operated without dedicated staff. It wasn’t until 1988 that the System hired its first full-time employee, and not until 2003 that investment professionals joined the team, marking a turning point in how the System managed and grew its assets.

Over the next three months, we will be sharing highlights from 1955 that reflect the people, policies, and progress that have shaped the System.

Stay tuned as we count down to 70 years of commitment, growth, and service.
