At MPERS, we understand the importance of relying on your pension payment. That’s why we make sure your benefit is delivered reliably and securely each month.

When Will I Get Paid?

MPERS pension benefits are issued on the last business day of each month. If that day falls on a weekend or holiday, your payment will be made on the preceding business day.

Tip: You can view your payment history by logging into myMPERS.

Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLAs)

If you’re eligible for a COLA, it will be included in your benefit payment during the same month each year. We’ll notify you in advance of any changes to your benefit amount due to COLAs, insurance premiums, or tax withholdings.

Taxes and Your Pension

Your MPERS pension benefit is subject to federal income tax and may be subject to Missouri state income tax. You may qualify for the Missouri Public Pension Exemption, which can reduce your state tax liability.

We’ll send your 1099-R tax form by the end of January each year for any pension income you received in the prior calendar year.

Returning to Work After Retirement?

If a retiree returns to a benefit-eligible position (one requiring at least 1,040 hours per year), their monthly retirement benefit is typically suspended during reemployment. After one continuous year of reemployment, the retiree may earn additional service credit, and MPERS will recalculate the benefit upon re-retirement.

Note: Rules vary by plan and position type. For example, Closed Plan retirees working in MOSERS benefit-eligible positions may continue receiving their MPERS benefit without interruption.

Stay Safe from Scams

Fraudsters often target retirees. Be cautious of:

  • Emails or calls asking for your Social Security number or banking information
  • Promises of early pension withdrawals
  • Fake websites mimicking MPERS

If something feels off, pause and contact us directly.
