This year marks a historic milestone: the 70th anniversary of the MoDOT and Patrol Employees’ Retirement System (MPERS). Established through Senate Bill 66, which became effective on August 29, 1955, MPERS began its journey with no startup funding. Monthly contributions from employees and employers were the only source of support. Just one month later, the System processed its first 109 retirements.
Over the decades, MPERS has grown from a modest operation into a robust retirement system serving more than 19,000 members and beneficiaries. The System has evolved significantly, hiring its first full-time employee in 1988 and adding investment professionals in 2003 to strengthen its financial stewardship.
Honoring Our History
Throughout the anniversary campaign, we have shared archival photos and stories that highlight the people, policies, and progress that shaped the System. From the creation of the Motor Equipment Division in 1955 to the appointment of civilian driver examiners in St. Louis, these glimpses into the past reflect the dedication and innovation that have defined MPERS.
