Communications Specialist

The MoDOT & Patrol Employees’ Retirement System (MPERS) in Jefferson City, Missouri has an opening for the newly created position of communications specialist. The primary responsibility of the position is to develop and oversee a comprehensive communications program that effectively communicates benefits to plan stakeholders. In addition, the successful candidate must process, deliver, and administer retirement benefits in accordance with state statutes. Effectively communicating these benefits in person and via webinars, telephone, or other relevant means is essential. The successful candidate will review and improve all aspects of the communication processes at MPERS, including, but not limited to, all publications, newsletters, website, etc. The person in this position must have the ability to ensure any ongoing communications are clear, correct, and concise. The communications specialist may also spend a portion of time performing technical work examining state pay records and employment documents to determine eligibility for benefits and must have the requisite skill to explain the benefit programs to all employees. The communications specialist must be comfortable with traveling throughout the state and speaking about the MPERS retirement process to large groups of stakeholders of the retirement system. Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited college or university with a four-year degree in journalism, communications, business, marketing, education, or closely related field and at least two years of professional experience in benefit administration, training, customer relations, insurance, or closely related areas. Additional qualifying experience in the areas of retirement administration or customer relations may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education. Strong presentation and customer service skills, excellent writing skills, close attention to detail, proficiency with relevant software (including Microsoft Office), and the ability to learn new software quickly are essential for the successful candidate. Familiarity with technical website functionality is preferred. Completion of or the ability to work towards the Certification of Achievement in Public Plan Policy for Pension Plans or similar program in the public pension industry is also required. Occasional overnight travel is required. The monthly salary range is $4,215 to $4,953 based upon qualifications and/or experience and includes a generous benefits package.
